The study for The Making of America extended over a period of nearly 40 years, and an organized effort to present this information in a published text was a concerted endeavor of nearly 14 years. The very fact that many of them are becoming obscure and misunderstood emphasizes the urgency of the task. The National Center for Constitutional Studies, a nonprofit educational foundation, was created in order to revive those original American concepts in all of their initial brilliance and vitality. It is one of the most thorough compilations of statements by the Framers relating to constitutional interpretation, and addresses the Constitution clause by clause - providing resources on the Founder's intent of each clause. The Making of America provides a wealth of material on the Founding Father's intentions when drafting the American Constitution. Therefore, there has been a need to review the history and development of the making of America in order to recapture the brilliant precepts which made Americans the first free people in modern times. This has resulted in some of their most unique contributions for a free and prosperous society becoming lost or misunderstood. For many years in the United States, there has been a gradual drifting away from the Founding Fathers' original success formula. I did not warm to Tereza either she is a damaged person, body-dysmorphic, which seems to have been caused by her challenging relationship with her mother. Tereza is aware of his infidelities, but tolerates them, for reasons that are not quite apparent – yes, she loves him, but it seems mainly to be fear and vulnerability that keep her with him. After he is relieved of his post as a surgeon, after getting into difficulties with the government about a critical letter he wrote that was published in a newspaper, he is employed as a window-cleaner, and seems to spend his work days having sex with his clients. Despite his genuine love for Tereza, he is serially unfaithful. Tomáš is a womaniser, I’d even go so far as to say a sex addict, whom I did not warm to. Other characters are Sabina, an artist, and Tomáš’s lover (one of them!), and Sabina’s lover Franz. The main protagonists are Tomáš, a surgeon, his wife Tereza, and their dog Karenin. This was for political reasons as the novel is set against the background of the so-called ‘Prague Spring’ of 1968, when the Soviet Army occupied the country. The Unbearable Lightness of Being is considered a classic in that particular category it was first published in 1984, in French translation, and not in the original Czech until 1985, but outside the then Soviet controlled Czechoslovakia. This was my choice for September in my Facebook Reading Challenge, the theme of which was a novel by an Eastern European writer. Later in life, at work, I wrote “long forms” and business plans while, at home, I wrote songs, poems and bits of whimsy to share with family and friends. When we were young, my sister and I used to write satirical sketches based on the era’s most popular tv westerns. I’m single and live with my three aging rescue dogs, Splatter, Spudley and Jasper, Last year, for personal reasons, I gave up island life and moved to Western Michigan where I live today. It was there that I wrote MATEGUAS ISLAND. Chebeague is an “unconnected” island – there is no bridge or causeway access is only by ferry or private boat. When I took early retirement, I moved to Oregon for a brief time, then on to Chebeague Island, Maine, where I resided for seven wonderful years. After college – at Carnegie – I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I spent most of my adult life, working as a financial analyst at Stanford Unversity School of Medicine. We moved to Michigan when I was young and that’s where I grew up. Hey Linda! Always a pleasure to connect with a fellow Carnegie Mellon alum! Why don’t you start out by telling us a little bit about yourself? We reached out to her to learn more about her journey… The screenshot below was taken on October 14, 2014. Her book – Mateguas Island – recently hit the number 1 spot on Amazon in the Horror > Occult category. BookBuzzr author Linda Watkins recently had an opportunity to celebrate. As you read, you really seem immersed in the eerie darkness, hear the crackle of debris underfoot, feel the shiver of something watching you from the shadows. It’s such a sensory story, relying on sound and touch nearly as much as sight. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you probably know that Victoria Schwab is one of my favorite authors, so I was delighted to get one of the early ARCs for this new book! And outside in the garden stands a crumbling wall, which houses a door made of iron, and Olivia cannot help feeling something is calling her from the other side. When she arrives, though, she finds a haunted place. Then, one day, she learns that she might not be alone in this world after all her uncle is looking for her, and invites her home to a place called Gallant. All she has to her name is a diary that used to belong to her mother, but it is a strange object-full of unusual illustrations and increasingly unhinged words. In Gallant, Olivia Prior has lived at Merilance School for Independent Girls for years, but she has never been at home there. |
